Ed developed
his interest in tennis as a Woodrow Wilson student under the guidance of the
local tennis coaching legend, Mr. Bob Fischer. He continued his tennis career
through high school playing both singles and doubles at Terre Haute South where
he played #2 singles.
While Ed was growing up his entire family were tennis
players. His father,
Paul, was also a tennis coach and his mother, Sue, now mans the reception desk at the
Bubble on weekends and some evenings.
Ed's tennis philosophy:
"Success is dependent on input. The students
[who] are serious
and focused achieve
[the] most direct success in tennis."
Ed's personal successes include: state finals for Terre Haute
South; as a member of the ISU tennis team; and as a qualifier for the 1987 US
Clay Court Championships. This tournament was eventually won by Mats Wilander. That 1987 season was the last year the Indy tournament was
played on clay and the event became the US Hard Court Championships in 1988.
Eventually, it became locally known as the GTE Championships, then the RCA
Championships, and now the Indy Championships played in mid July each year..
